What would happen, polite requests, future-in-the-past

Cuándo usarlo

  • Hypothetical situations: 'Yo iría contigo, pero tengo trabajo.'
  • Polite requests: '¿Me podrías ayudar?' / 'Me gustaría un café.'
  • Future-in-the-past — what someone said would happen: 'Dijo que vendría.'
  • Probability in the past: 'Serían las diez cuando llegó.' ('It must have been ten.')

Formación

Just like the future: take the full infinitive and add the endings. The conditional uses the exact same irregular stems as the future.

Irregularidades clave

  • The conditional and future share their irregular stems exactly. Learn one set, get the other free.
  • The conditional endings are identical to the imperfect -er/-ir endings — but the conditional attaches them to the full infinitive, not the stem.

Drop the vowel

Same as the future: podr-, sabr-, querr-, habr-, cabr-.

The conditional reuses every irregular stem from the future. Only the endings differ.

Stems with n or l in the stem keep the d throughout the conditional.
