Cuándo usarlo

  • Future events: 'Mañana iré al médico.'
  • Promises and predictions: 'Te llamaré esta noche.'
  • Probability in the present: '¿Dónde está Juan? — Estará en casa.' ('He must be home.')

Formación

Take the full infinitive (do NOT drop the ending) and add one shared set of endings. All three families — -ar, -er, -ir — use the same endings.

Irregularidades clave

  • The endings are ALWAYS regular. Only the stem changes — and the same modified stem is used in the conditional.
  • Every irregular falls into one of three small groups: drop the vowel, replace with d, or fully shortened.
  • Only twelve verbs are irregular in the future. If you learn these stems, you've learned them for the conditional too.

Grupo 1

Drop the infinitive vowel

Remove the -e- of the infinitive ending before adding future endings.

These -er verbs drop their theme vowel: poder → podr-, saber → sabr-, etc. Querer doubles its r: querr-.

Grupo 2

Replace the vowel with d

Swap the -e- or -i- of the infinitive ending for a d.

These are usually -er and -ir verbs whose stem ends in n or l. The combination of consonants forces the insertion of a d.

Grupo 3

Fully reduced stems

Just two: hacer → har-, decir → dir-.

These verbs chop the infinitive aggressively. The endings still attach normally.
