  • What used to happen: 'De niño jugaba al fútbol.'
  • Background description in a story: 'Hacía frío y la calle estaba vacía.'
  • Two simultaneous past actions: 'Mientras yo cocinaba, él leía.'
  • Age, time, and weather in the past: 'Eran las tres, tenía diez años, llovía.'

Formación

The imperfect is the most regular tense in Spanish. -ar verbs and -er/-ir verbs each have one set of endings, and there are only three irregular verbs in the whole language.

Irregularidades clave

  • Only three verbs are irregular in the entire tense: ser, ir, and ver.
  • Watch the accent in -ar nosotros forms: hablábamos, jugábamos, estábamos.
  • The yo and él forms are identical — context or a pronoun disambiguates.

Grupos irregulares en detalle

Cada familia comparte un mismo patrón. Reconocer el grupo es más útil que memorizar verbo por verbo.

Grupo 1

The only three irregulars: ser, ir, ver

Memorize once and you're done with imperfect irregularities forever.

Ver keeps the e of its old infinitive (veer), which is why it has an extra vowel: veía, not vía. Ser and ir are simply unique.
