Presente de Indicativo

What is happening now, habits, and general truths

← Volver a Gramática

Cuándo usarlo

  • Habitual actions: 'Trabajo de lunes a viernes.'
  • Ongoing actions where English uses present continuous: 'Hablo con mi madre' = 'I'm talking to my mother.'
  • General truths and facts: 'El agua hierve a cien grados.'
  • Near future when context is clear: 'Mañana voy al médico.'

Formación

Drop the infinitive ending (-ar, -er, -ir) to get the stem, then add the matching set of endings. The endings are different for each of the three conjugation families.

Terminaciones

PersonaVerbos -ARVerbos -ERVerbos -IR
Yo-o-o-o
-as-es-es
Él / Ella-a-e-e
Nosotros-amos-emos-imos
Vosotros-áis-éis-ís
Ellos-an-en-en

Irregularidades clave

  • Stem-changing verbs change the vowel in stressed syllables: e→ie, o→ue, e→i. Nosotros and vosotros keep the original stem because the stress falls on the ending.
  • Yo-form irregulars: many verbs only deviate in the yo form — tener→tengo, salir→salgo, poner→pongo, hacer→hago, conocer→conozco.
  • A handful of verbs are fully irregular: ser, estar, ir, haber.

Grupos irregulares en detalle

Cada familia comparte un mismo patrón. Reconocer el grupo es más útil que memorizar verbo por verbo.

Grupo 1

Stem change e → ie

Stressed e in the stem becomes ie in all forms EXCEPT nosotros / vosotros.

The 'boot' or 'shoe' verbs: the change happens wherever the stress falls on the stem. In nosotros and vosotros the stress moves to the ending, so the stem stays intact.

Grupo 2

Stem change o → ue

Stressed o becomes ue in the same boot-shaped pattern.

Includes the rare u → ue verb 'jugar' (the only one). Again, nosotros and vosotros are spared because the stress moves off the stem.

Grupo 3

Only happens with -ir verbs. Stressed e in the stem becomes i.

This pattern is restricted to -ir verbs of communication or transfer: pedir, decir, servir, repetir, seguir.

Grupo 4

Yo-form irregulars (-go / -zco / -oy)

Only the yo form is irregular. Everything else is regular.

These verbs add -go, -zco, or -oy in the first person. The rest of the conjugation behaves normally (though some are ALSO stem-changers, like tener and venir).
