Pretérito Indefinido

Completed actions with a clear beginning and end

← Volver a Gramática

Cuándo usarlo

  • An action that happened at a specific moment: 'Ayer vi a Marta.'
  • A sequence of completed events: 'Entré, me senté y pedí un café.'
  • Actions with a defined duration: 'Viví en México dos años.'
  • An interruption of an ongoing past action: 'Llovía cuando salí.'

Formación

Drop the infinitive ending and add the preterite endings. -er and -ir verbs share the same set; -ar verbs have their own.

Irregularidades clave

  • Strong preterites use a special stem and unaccented endings (-e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron). Note: no written accents on yo or él.
  • Verbs whose stem ends in j drop the i in the ellos form: dijeron, trajeron, condujeron.
  • Ser and ir share the same preterite — context tells you which.
  • -ir stem-changers shift the vowel in third person (él, ellos): pidió/pidieron, durmió/durmieron.

Grupos irregulares en detalle

Cada familia comparte un mismo patrón. Reconocer el grupo es más útil que memorizar verbo por verbo.

Grupo 1

Strong preterites — u-stems

New stem ending in u + unaccented endings -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.

A small family of high-frequency verbs takes a u in the stem. Notice yo ends in -e (not -í) and él ends in -o (not -ó) — no accents.

saber

En contexto

  • "Ayer tuve que trabajar hasta tarde."

Yesterday I had to work late.

  • "Supe la verdad por casualidad."

I found out the truth by chance.

Grupo 2

Strong preterites — i-stems

New stem ending in i + the same unaccented endings.

Same family, different vowel. Hacer adds a spelling shift in the él form: hizo, with z to keep the soft sound before o.

Grupo 3

Strong preterites — j-stems

Stem ends in j + endings -e, -iste, -o, -imos, -isteis, -eron (NO i in ellos).

When the stem ends in j, the i of -ieron drops out. So it's dijeron, not 'dijieron'.

Grupo 4

Ser, ir, dar, ver

Four short, fully irregular preterites — none use accents in yo / él.

Ser and ir share identical forms (context disambiguates). Dar and ver borrow -er/-ir endings without accents.

Grupo 5

-ir stem-changers in 3rd person

Otherwise regular, but the él and ellos forms shift e → i or o → u in the stem.

Only -ir verbs do this in the preterite. -ar and -er stem-changers behave normally here.

  • "Pidieron la cuenta y se fueron."

They asked for the check and left.

Grupo 6

Spelling changes in the yo form (-car, -gar, -zar)

yo → -qué / -gué / -cé to preserve the sound before -é.

These are not really 'irregular' — the spelling adapts to keep the consonant sound the same. The rest of the conjugation is fully regular.
